batExhibHilary’s extraordinary bats were inspired by plaster casts displayed in the Smithsonian Museum. Her interest is twofold. First, their frequent perception in western culture as evil and ugly, when in Chinese culture, for example, they are associated with prosperity and good luck. Secondly, the fine balance visually between a creature of much beauty and their popular image as ugly mammals. The lizards are the beginning of experimental ideas for further sculptures.
