Sizzle Festival

Craig Viveiros’ 5iveFs brings SIZZLE to London! In collaboration with the ArtHouse Crouch End, SIZZLE promise to turn up the heat with it’s curation of bold and daring cinematic works from the city’s most iconic film-makers.

Pat (Cassie McFarlane), an ordinary London girl with a caring family, a job she enjoys and her own flat, seeks nothing more than to settle down to a life of married, middle-class conformity. Her cosy world is jolted when she meets Del (Victor Romero), a charming and vaguely discontented toolmaker, who soon moves in and then loses his job causing them both to challenge their assumptions about each other and their aspirations.

Burning an Illusion, the pioneering first feature from Menelik Shabazz marks a coming of age for black British cinema. A film about transformation and identity, this sensitive and entertaining love story traces the emotional and political growth of a young black couple in Thatcher’s London.

“This remains a vibrant and liberating touchstone of Black British cinema more than 40 years on from its premiere” BFI

Before the film, there will be a short called Cab Ride and following the film Tega Okiti & Ola Jones will be in discussion. This session is curated by Ola Jones.

Kelly (Lorraine Stanley), a prostitute, is sent by her pimp, Derek (Johnny Harris), to procure a young girl for aging gangster Duncan (Alexander Morton). She brings back 11-year-old Joanne (Georgia Groome) — but sex between Duncan and Joanne goes badly, and the gangster is inadvertently killed, forcing the two girls to flee London for the resort city of Brighton. As Kelly struggles to earn money to send Joanne to her grandmother, Duncan’s son orders Derek to find the girls and take revenge.

“The best British film of the century!” The Big Issue

The film will be followed by a pre-recorded Q&A with director, Paul Andrew Williams. Following the Q&A, there will be drinks and networking in the bar.

First screened on ITV in 1983, Made in Britain was the third collaboration between Alan Clarke and screenwriter David Leland. The play focuses on teenager Trevor (Tim Roth), a violent, racist skinhead who refuses to cooperate with any attempts by the courts or social workers to rehabilitate him.

“An unsettling and unforgettable experience!” Sight and Sound

The film will be followed by a pre-recorded Q&A with actor, Tim Roth.

While hoping to win a Sound System competition, Blue (Brinsley Forde) looks to fight against the struggles he faces as a Black man in 1980s Britain. Set against the backdrop of a newly-installed Thatcher government, the end of punk and the rise of mod and ska, and featuring a raucous reggae soundtrack, Babylon is a potent mix of music and social realism.

Screenwriter Martin Stellman (Quadrophenia) and director Franco Rosso (Dread, Beat and Blood) present an uncompromising look at urban survival on the streets of South London, expertly shot by celebrated cinematographer Chris Menges (The Killing Fields).

“”One of the greatest British films!” MOJO

Before the film, there will be a short by Edem Kelman. Following the films there will be a DJ and drinks in the bar.
