Greg Doran’s ‘King Lear’ is a magnificent production, with Antony Sher in the lead role giving a monumental performance. From the opening scene in which Lear divides his kingdom between his three daughters, he’s already hinting at the descent into madness that’s to come!
Apart from the incredible acting from Sher, the production is packed with some very good performances. Paapa Essiedu is a first-rate Edmund, filled with the mocking irony of the born outsider. David Troughton beautifully traces Gloucester’s journey from credulous blusterer to the broken figure who’s comforted in his blindness by a mad king.
